Stephen Sondheim, a Jug-Band Christmas, Ivoryton in ‘22, At the Movies, and Gift Ideas

“No One Is Alone”: Stephen Sondheim gave us that song and hundreds others, from “Send in the Clowns” to “Comedy Tonight.” The composer and lyricist died suddenly right after Thanksgiving at his home in Roxbury. He was 91. Think of the musicals he gave us. They include some of the most innovative, such as West Side Story and Gypsy, for which he wrote only the lyrics. His other works include A Funny Thing Happened, Company, Sweeney Todd, Follies, and A Little Night Music. At the time of his death, he was working on a new musical that he hoped would be ready for the 2022-’23 season. Currently, a revival of Company is on Broadway and Assassins is off-Broadway.

Another NYC Holiday Offering: Jim Hensen’s Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas is finally making its New York City debut, off-Broadway through Sunday, Jan. 2. You may recall its popular run at Goodspeed years ago. It will also be available to stream through Sunday, Jan. 2. Visit newvictory.org and click on tickets and events.

Ivoryton in 2022: Ivoryton Playhouse will present six shows during 2022, each with relatively long runs. The season opens on April 7 to May 1 with a new musical Star of Freedom based on the novel Exodus. It will be followed by a new comedy, Native Garden from May 19 to June 12. During the summer, the theater will present Smokey Joe’s Café from June 30 to July 31 and Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash from Aug. 11 to Sept. 11. During the fall it’s The Great Gatsby, from Sept. 29 to Oct. 23. For the holidays, it’s The Winter Wonderettes. Subscriptions are now sale at 860-767-7318. Tickets for individual shows will go on sale March 1.

At the Movies: People are anticipating the official opening of Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story. It opens later this month though various trailers are on the web. I found the play The Humans deeply moving. The film version just opened to fine reviews. It is also available on Showtime. I recommend it.

Give the Gift of Theater: If you are looking for last minute gifts, for others or for yourself, all of Connecticut’s terrific theaters have a variety of gift cards. The recipient can pick the show and the date. Just visit the websites and make your purchase.
