Goodspeed Announces Schedule, Something for Fans of Jane Austen, Playing the Palace, and


2022 at Goodspeed: Two well-known and well-loved musicals plus one new musical that was originally scheduled for 2020 are on the program for Goodspeed next year. The season will open May 13 to July 3 with Cabaret, for the first time on the Goodspeed stage. Next up will be the long-awaited world premiere of Anne of Green Gables: A New Musical from July 15 to Sept. 4. The main season will end with 42nd Street from Sept. 16 to Nov. 6, which features tap dancing galore. Goodspeed also promises a world premiere holiday event, a Goodspeed original, from Nov. 18 to Dec. 30, 2022. Season tickets for all three shows are on sale now through the box office at 860-873-8668. Tickets to individual shows will go on sale in March.

Jane Austen Fans: Playhouse on Park in West Hartford is continuing the story from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice with Christmas at Pemberley, running from Wednesday, Dec. 1 to Sunday, Dec. 19. The play takes place two years after the novel ends and the quiet, bookish sister, Mary is the unlikely heroine during a holiday visit at her sister’s home. For tickets, visit PlayhouseOnPark.org.

Playing the Palace: The Palace Theater in Waterbury has been the rehearsal site for multiple Broadway tours. This year, the tour of A Christmas Story, The Musical will open its tour (after final rehearsing at the Palace) on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 3 and 4. The Second Year: The Legacy Theatre in Branford had a successful first season. For 2022, it will present four main stage presentations: the musical I Do! I Do! from April 28 to May 14, the thriller Deathtrap from June 2 to 18, the musical/revue You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown from Aug. 18 to Sept. 3, and close with The Great Gatsby, A Live Radio Play from Sept. 15 to Oct. 1. Off-Broadway: The Irish Rep (IrishRep.org) is presenting The Streets of New York from Saturday, Dec. 4 to Sunday, Jan. 30. The show is an adaptation of a Dion Boucicault play that will feature songs as it tells the story of the Irish who immigrated to New York City years ago. The York Theater is presenting a world premier show celebrating the works of Irving Berlin. Cheek to Cheek: Irving Berlin in Hollywood will run Friday, Nov. 24 to Sunday, Jan. 2. It features the songs as well as stories about the man who wrote literally hundreds of classic tunes including “White Christmas,” “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” and more. Macy’s Parade: This year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will feature performances by the casts of the Broadway shows Six, Moulin Rouge! and Wicked among others. These performances are only for the television audience.

Streaming: Jonathan Larson died just before the opening of his musical Rent. He had only one early musical, an autobiographical work, tick, tick…BOOM! which has been staged off-Broadway. You can now see the show with Tony-winner Andrew Garfield in a movie adaptation on Netflix.
