A Family Affair, a Tony Award Winner, an Irreverent Musical, and More

Family Affair: Falsettoland, now at Music Theatre of Connecticut in Norwalk through Sunday, Nov. 21, features a father and son playing father and son. Rabbi/Cantor Dan Sklar plays Marvin and his son, Ari, plays Jason. The award-winning show which focuses on the neurotic Marvin, has music by William Finn. For tickets, visit MusicTheatreofCt.com.

Tony Winner to Hartford: The Band’s Visit, which almost swept the Tony awards in 2017 (it won 10 awards) will be at the Bushnell from Tuesday, Nov. 16 to Sunday, Nov. 21. It is an offbeat story about a group of Egyptian musicians who end up in the wrong town in Israel, due to a mix up in the name of the town. This small-scale musical offers hope and joy. I loved the Broadway production. The national tour features award-winning Israeli film actor Sasson Gabay, who created the role in the 2007 film of the same name. For tickets, visit Bushnell.org.

‘Pure Imagination’: If you have ever heard or hummed the songs “Pure Imagination,” “The Candy Man,” “Goldfinger,” “What Kind of Fool Am I,” or hundreds of other songs, you know the work of Leslie Bricusse. The British lyricist wrote musicals including Stop the World, I Want to Get Off; Jekyll & Hyde; Victor/Victoria; and others as well as musical films Dr. Doolittle and Willie Wonka & and the Chocolate Factory and title songs for James Bond movies. Bricusse passed away in England recently at 90.

Irreverent Musical: Hartford Stage will close its 2021-’22 season with a new musical featuring a book by John Leguizamo and Tony Taccone. Kiss My Aztec! is described as being loosely based on Latin American history as a group of Aztecs lead a resistance against the Spanish invaders in the 16th century. It will run June 2 to 26. The group includes The Bushnell (Hartford), Garde Arts Center (New London), The Palace Theatre (Stamford), The Palace Theater (Waterbury), The Shubert Theatre (New Haven), and The Warner Theatre in Torrington. The group has a website, CTArtsCoalition.org, which will highlight upcoming performances at all the venues.

2022 at Westport: The 2022 season at Westport Country Playhouse will include some shows scheduled for the canceled 2020 season plus additions. The playhouse will open with the Pulitzer-Prize winning musical Next to Normal (April 5 to 23), followed by Straight White Men from May 24 to June 11.
