Simon the Fiddler by Paulette Jiles

In this post-Civil War historical fiction set in Texas, the main character, Simon, an accomplished fiddler, escapes Confederate conscription with three other musician escapees. He travels throughout Texas in search of his love, an Irish immigrant who works for a Union family. They’re poor and homeless, but manage to make their way by winning people over with their music. Simon is shrewd and innovative, determined, and a survivor. This is a light, informative read of survival and success, even though they encounter many obstacles.
