Bold Choices and Classics in the Works

A Bold Choice: Legacy Theatre’s next production is a bold choice, a Greek tragedy. Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex will run through Sunday, Aug. 22. We may have read it in college, but few of us have seen a live production. The production will include “a cast of 10, choral movement, and ancient costuming” according to the press material. For tickets, visit legacytheatrect.org.

More CT Arts Groups Get Federal Grants: Another round of federally funded Shuttered Venue Operator Grants will benefit a wide range of Connecticut organizations. Among those are Hartford Stage, the Shubert, Waterbury Palace, Westport Country Playhouse, Summer Theater of New Canaan, as well as both the New Haven and Hartford symphonies, Opera Theater of Connecticut, and the dance/movement troupe Pilobolus. Other groups received funds earlier, and some in our area are still waiting to hear.

Live and Outdoors: TheaterWorks is returning to live productions with Walden in partnership with Riverfront Recapture. The play will be performed through Sunday, Aug. 22 in person and will stream Sunday, Aug. 15 to Sunday, Aug. 29. Performances will be held at Riverfront Recapture, 100 Meadow Road, Windsor. According to press materials, “Cassie returns from a year-long moon mission and finds herself in a remote cabin in the woods.” Visiting is her sister and her partner. For tickets or information, visit TWHartford.org.

Sondheim Classic: The Connecticut Shakespeare Festival, which is related to Playhouse on Park, is presenting the Sondheim musical Into the Woods through Sunday, Aug. 22. The performances will be held at Playhouse’s theater in West Hartford. The musical takes us into a fairytale world and then shows us the reality of it. For tickets, visit ConnecticutShakespeareFestival.org or PlayhouseOnPark.org.

Little Girl Blue: Little Girl Blue: The Nina Simone Musical, which is being workshopped at Goodspeed’s by the River series, will play Wednesday, Aug. 4 through Sunday, Aug. 29. The show is being billed as a full musical and has hopes of going on to other productions. For information or tickets, visit goodspeed.org.

New Season in West Hartford: Playhouse on Park is planning five live productions for the 2021-’22 season. It opens with Two Jews Walk into a War (Sept. 22 to Oct. 8) about the last remaining Jews in Afghanistan. For the holiday season, Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley will run Dec. 1 to 19, followed by the music of Louis Jordan in Five Guys Named Moe from Jan. 26 to Feb. 27. The Agitators is a play about the friendship between Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglas and runs May 25 to June 12. The season ends with Pippin from July 6 to Aug. 21. For information or tickets, visit PlayhouseOnPark.org.

New York Notes: It looks like there may not be an empty theater this fall on Broadway. Pass Over, which will be the first play to open on Broadway (it begins previews Wednesday, Aug. 4) has announced that for the month of August, proof of full vaccination will be required. Those unvaccinated due to age or other exemptions must present a negative test within 72 hours. The production plans to revisit and adjust protocols as needed. No other production has issued such strict guidelines, but the show is opening before the official reopening date announced by the governor.

Costume Exhibit: You may not be able to see the shows, but you can see the costumes. The newly formed Costume Industry Coalition will display costumes from Six, The Lion King, Moulin Rouge, and many more as well as costumes from ballet at the Showstoppers! Spectacular Costumes from Stage & Screen, which opens Thursday, Aug. 5 at 234 West 42nd Street. For information and tickets, visit ShowstoppersNYC.com
