Reopenings, Near and Far

Reopening: Ivoryton Playhouse will reopen with a five-play season beginning with Murder for Two from Thursday, July 1 to Sunday, Aug. 1. Other shows will be announced. The show has no intermission, and socially distanced seating will be used; masks are required. Murder for Two features two performers playing 13 roles and the piano in what is billed as a “zany blend of classic musical comedy and madcap mystery.” For tickets, visit IvorytonPlayhouse.org or call 860-767-7318.

Next at the Legacy: Do you watch TV cooking competitions like The Great British Bake-Off? Even if you don’t, the new show, Just Desserts: A Musical Bake-Off running through Sunday, June 27 at Branford’s Legacy Theatre sounds like fun. It has the usual combination of contestants including the confident reigning champion, the mystery man, the reluctant contestant, and others. For tickets, visit LegacyTheatreCt.org.

Concerts: Goodspeed is repeating its outdoor concert series that it started last year. The concerts take place in a tent in the Goodspeed lower parking lots. Five concerts have been announced so far; each concert runs on selected dates. Turn Back Time: Ben & Dee Rock the ’70s, ’80s and Beyond with Ben Clark and Dee Roscioli runs from Thursday, June 10 to Sunday, June 20; Ambassador of Love: Celebrating Pearl Bailey with Rashidra Scott runs Tuesday, June 22 to Sunday, July 18; Bennett & Babs: The Songs of Tony Bennett and Barbra Streisand with Joe Cassidy and Jackie Burns runs Wednesday, June 23 to Sunday, July 4; and Together Again: Max (Chemin) and Celeste (Rose) Sing Their Broadway Favorites runs Wednesday, July 7 to Sunday, July 18. The last concert announced so far is John and the Devil’s Box: In Concert from Thursday, July 22 to Sunday, Aug. 1. Visit Goodspeed.org to see the schedule for each performer and to purchase tickets.

Sondheim: Madison Lyric Stage is presenting The Sun Sits Low: An Evening of Stephen Sondheim in concert on Friday, June 11 through Sunday, June 13. The concert features a cast of 14 singers presenting songs by the composer/lyricist for musicals that include A Little Night Music, Company, West Side Story, and more. The concert will be held outdoors under a tent on the grounds of the Deacon John Grave House. For information visit MadisonLyricStage.org.

More Broadway Opening Dates: Not only are more shows announcing reopening dates, but some shows may change their previously announced dates. The latest announcements include Hadestown, which is going to be the first to reopen on Sept. 2. But I wouldn’t be surprised if some other shows also move up reopening dates. Girl from the North Country, which was in previews and was the last show I saw, will begin previews Oct. 13. Moulin Rouge is reopening Sept. 24 and Aladdin on Sept. 28. Dear Evan Hansen returns Dec. 11.

Lincoln Center’s new musical, Flying over Sunset, begins previews Nov. 4 and opens Dec. 6. MJ, the Michael Jackson Musical begins previews Dec. 6 and opens Feb. 1, 2022. Roundabout’s Trouble in Mind starts on Oct. 29 with an opening on Nov. 18. The Broadway debut of Lackawanna Blues begins Sept. 14 and opens Sept. 28. Tickets for all of these are on sale at either Telecharge.com or TicketMaster.com.

Some off-Broadway shows are also planning to reopen including Little Shop of Horrors and Jersey Boys.
