Goodspeed Kids Company, Celebrating Broadway, a Benefit, and More

Summer for Kids: Goodspeed Musicals is offering a series of classes this summer as part of its Kids Company, all virtual. Schools can take advantage of the Goodspeed Classroom that is now in virtual format. It uses recent productions to explore the arts. For children aged seven and up, the theater is offering a Master Class Series, Advanced Master Class (18 and older), Virtual Ensembles, and Private Studios, which are one-on-one. It culminates with a virtual showcase. For information, visit Goodspeed.org.

Celebrating Broadway: I caught up with New York City’s Town Hall Broadway by the Year presentation, which began at the end of April with a program of Cole Porter songs. Next up is Kander & Ebb on Monday, May 10 and Andrew Lloyd Webber on May 24. You need to purchase tickets for these and they run 45 minutes to an hour. On the site TheTownHall.org, you can access condensed versions of many Broadway by the Year concerts which celebrate all the musicals of a particular year.

Streaming: You still have time catch two productions by the Mint Theater. Through Sunday, May 16 is the never-produced play Yours Unfaithfully, a comedy-drama about a couple with an open marriage. Also on is A Picture of Autumn. Check out MintTheater.org

A New Musical: Breathe is a new pandemic musical that, in five interlocking suites, explores the impact the virus has had on five relationships. The world premier is on Friday, May 14. Among the performers are Brian Stokes Mitchell, Kelli O’Hara, Matt Doyle, Patti Murin, and more. For tickets, visit Breathe.com

Berkshires: The Berkshire Theater group, which has its main stage in Pittsfield and its smaller theater in Stockbridge, is producing a summer season beginning with Proof from June 18 to July 10. Others will include The Importance of Being Ernest, Nina Simone: Four Women, and more, plus concerts featuring Norm Lewis and Kelli O’Hara. The productions will be performed in a tent adjacent to the theaters. For information, visit BerkshireTheatreGroup.org.

Broadway Barks: The annual event hosted by Bernadette Peters and which features adoptable dogs (and cats) will be virtual again this year. Broadway Barks across America is on Sunday, May 23 at 7 p.m. Celebrities will present the adoptable pets from shelters across the country. For more information visit BroadwayBarks.com

Backing Away: Scott Rudin, a major Broadway producer, is “stepping away” from producing after multiple accusations of bullying employees and performers. He was the lead producer for the up-coming revival of The Music Man with Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster. The show will continue but without him.

Benefit for Lincoln Center: Audra McDonald, Patti LuPone, Ruthie Ann Miles, and others will be part of a free virtual benefit for Lincoln Center Theater. It’s on Thursday, May 13 and will stream until Monday, May 17. It will offer a sneak peek at the up-coming season. Donations are suggested. It’s on the Lincoln Center YouTube Channel.
