Deacon King Kong by James McBride

Wonderfully rich characters and soulful writing transports the reader to 1969 Harlem, where the complex and perennially drunk 71 year-old Deacon shoots Deems, a young drug dealer who was like a son to him. Well, it’s complicated. After reading this novel, I will read anything by James McBride, and I recommend you do, too.
