Nora Webster by Colm Toibin

In the late 1960s in Ireland, Nora Webster is the mother of four, mourning the death of her husband and struggling to keep her family afloat. She hasn’t worked outside the house in more than 20 years and has no savings and no higher education. Her outlook is grim. She goes back to work for her first employer and we follow her life as she emerges from her bereavement and strives to become independent. Toibin is a great writer and this story is a compelling portrait of an individual and of a community.
