Revised Theater Schedules Begin to Come Together

Another Schedule Change: West Hartford’s Playhouse on Park is among the state’s professional theater companies to announced schedule changes. Its Stop/time dance theater’s production of Divas, first rescheduled through May 10, has been postponed again. The new dates will be announced. The production of Ugly Lies the Bone may be produced in future season. The theater hopes to produce the young audiences show The Amazing Adventures of Dr. Wonderful and Her Dog (Tuesday, May 26 through Friday, June 12) and the main stage musical, It Shoulda Been You (Wednesday, July 1 through Sunday, Aug. 2) as planned. Online Learning: The Elm City Shakespeare Company has an online platform for all its educational programming. Parents may use this with children. It includes curricula, online performance library, a Shakespeare bibliography, and a list of classes, books, lectures and activities available throughout the country. Hartford Stage Reschedules: The final Hartford Stage production of the 2019-’20 season and the special summer engagement have been rescheduled. Ah, Wilderness, Eugene O’Neill’s only comedy, is now scheduled for Oct. 22 through Nov. 15. The special engagement of The Complete History of Comedy (Abridged) is now scheduled for Oct. 1 through 11. Following Ah, Wilderness, the annual production of A Christmas Carol-A Ghost Story of Christmas will run Nov. 27 through Dec. 27. The 2020-’21 season will official start in January. The six plays include: Shakespeare’s As You Like It, the world premiere of Simona’s Search, Pearl Cleage’s Angry, Raucous and Shamelessly Gorgeous, and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, plus two additional shows. Dates will be announced.

Playing the Palace: Waterbury’s Palace Theater has announced its 2020-’21 Broadway series. It begins with Waitress, Oct. 2 to 3; The Band’s Visit, Nov. 28 to 29; the original one man show of Chazz Palmineri’s A Bronx Tale, Dec. 18 to 19; Beautiful, Feb. 26 to 27; Anastasia, April 27 to 29; and Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, June 4 to 5.

Classic Musicals: Goodspeed has launched a podcast “In the Spotlight–Goodspeed’s Deep Dive into Classic Musicals,” which will explore favorite musicals from contemporary hits to classics. A new podcast will be available biweekly on Wednesdays. You can find In the Spotlight on the Goodspeed website (Goodspeed.org), Apple iTunes, and Spotify.

Two Legends: Theater (and Connecticut theater) lost the extraordinary actor Brian Dennehy in New Haven on April 15. It was not due to the virus. I remember many extraordinary performances including Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman on Broadway and Long Day’s Journey into Night. At Long Wharf he was seen in Krapp’s Last Tape and more recently Endgame. Tony and Oscar winner Shirley Knight also passed away (also from non-virus related causes) on April 22.
