In this novel, aimed at young teens, set in dystopian American West, runaway teen Esther hides in the wagon of The Librarians of the Southwest Territory to escape certain persecution at the hands of her father. The librarians, three women traveling the West distributing “approved materials” to far-flung communities, are on a journey to deliver a package to Utah. As Esther learns skills necessary to survive with the librarians, she also has the opportunity to explore her attraction to one of her companions. As she learns the librarians’ true mission, her life takes an unexpected direction.
