Land of Tears by Robert Harms

Robert Harms, a Guilford resident and professor of history and African studies at Yale University, takes us on a historical journey beginning in 1870 when equatorial Africa was almost completely unknown to the outside world. This tells the story of how, in the span of 30 years, European and Arab forces explored and exploited the region, upending cultures, economies, and lives. While not all of these efforts were driven by greed, brutality was common, and commercial interests prevailed. This scholarly and compelling story also draws a connection between the Congo and Ivoryton.
