10/10/2019 12:01 AMHall of Fame: Michael Price, who was the man behind Goodspeed Musicals for decades before retiring, will be inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame on Monday, Nov. 18. It’s the 49th annual induction ceremony honoring lifetime achievement in the American Theater. The Hall of Fame is at the Gershwin Theatre.
Forbidden Romance: The romance that is the center of On the Grounds of Belonging, which opens the Long Wharf season, is forbidden in multiple ways: Two gay men in the 1950s fall in love in Houston, Texas. Apocalyptic Play: The Yale Drama School is opening its season with Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play Saturday, Oct. 26 to Friday, Nov. 1 at the Iseman Theater on Chapel Street. It is described as a “dark comedy about the commercialization of art, the human impulse for storytelling, and what’s left when everything else has been destroyed.” It includes music and choreography. Return Visit: The Book of Mormon is making its third visit to the Bushnell in Hartford. This time it runs Tuesday, Oct. 15 through Sunday, Oct. 20. For tickets, visit Bushnell.org. The musical is still on Broadway after eight years.
Worth Seeing: Norwalk’s Music Theatre of Connecticut has a fine production of the wonderful musical Ragtime through Sunday, Oct. 13. This small theater (you are never more than four rows from the stage) has done a great job taking an epic piece and making it work on the smaller stage with a cast of just 15. World Premiere: Yale Rep is opening its season with Girls by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins through Saturday, Oct. 26. The play is said to be “after” The Bacchae by Euripides. That tragedy is viewed as one of the best ever written. Girls sets the play in more contemporary times and includes a DJ, dance music, and live-streaming video. NYC Notes: The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is now previews at the Longacre Theatre. It’s there for a 16-week engagement. The show is a musical adaptation of the novel about a young man who has powers he can’t control because he is the son of gods. The show has been on tour. Tickets are available through Telecharge. The musical Cyrano with Peter Dinklage has already extended its off-Broadway run through Dec. 22. Previews begin Friday, Oct. 11 with the official opening on Friday, Nov. 7. The show began life at Goodspeed’s Terris Theatre. Off-Broadway, the Signature Theatre is reviving Horton Foote’s play, The Young Man from Atlanta, beginning Tuesday, Nov. 5. Michael Wilson (former artistic director of Hartford Stage) is directing the Pulitzer-Prize winning work. For tickets, visit signaturetheatre.org.
