Farewell Hal Prince; the New and the Old; Shubert Musicals; Gyllenhall and Sturridge; and More

A Loss for Theater: At the end of July, Broadway, and, in reality, theater everywhere, lost a giant with the death of director and producer Hal Prince. A Yale Drama School grad, he was influential particularly in musical theater. Just a few of his credits as director: She Loves Me, Phantom of the Opera, Evita, Cabaret, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Company, Follies, Sweeney Todd, and dozens of others. He produced such musicals as Pajama Game, Damn Yankees, Fiorello, West Side Story, and many of the musicals he directed.

Theater at UConn: The Connecticut Repertory Theatre that is on the UConn campus in Storrs and includes students from the drama programs will present four productions on the Main Stage and two on the smaller Studio stage. On the Main Stage is Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard (Thursday, Oct. 3 to Sunday, Oct. 13), Shakespeare in Love from Nov. 21 to 23 and Dec. 4 to 8, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Feb. 27 to March 8 and, with the nationally known puppet art program, Little Shop of Horrors, April 23 to May 3. On the Studio stage is The Wolves, Oct. 24 to Nov. 3 and Men on Boats, March 26 to April 5. For subscriptions or tickets, visit crt.uconn.edu or call 860-486-2113.

Gyllenhaal & Sturridge: Broadway is blessed with incredible performances by Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Sturridge in Sea Wall/A Life. Each performs a 45-minute monologue that will rivet you. The themes are love and loss. It’s a limited run, so try to see by Sunday, Sept. 29. You can read my full review at 2ontheaisle.wordpress.com.
