The Opera Theater of Connecticut (OTC) will celebrate its 34th anniversary with a production of the popular comic opera L’elisir D’amore (The Elixir of Love) at the Andrews Memorial Theater, 54 East Main Street, Clinton. Performances are Tuesday, Aug. 6; Thursday, Aug. 8; and Saturday, Aug. 10 at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Aug. 11 at 6 p.m.

L’Elisir d’Amore is Domenico Gaetano Maria Donizetti’s romantic comedy, suitable for the whole family.

L’Elisir alternates the lightest of music with dazzling melodies, which reach their peak in Act II with the well-known aria “Una furtiva lagrima,” a delicate ballad for tenor, full of melancholy and great sensuality. The full art of bel canto can be found in the virtuosity of the arias, duets, and trios of this masterpiece by the composer of Lucia di Lammermoor, says OTC Artistic Director Alan Mann.

The production will be fully staged with colorful costumes, sung in Italian with English supertitles, and accompanied by orchestra. The cast includes the blend of emerging singers with seasoned professionals.

Upright and slightly naïve, Nemorino (John Noh) is infatuated with beautiful and slightly fickle Adina (Claudia Rosenthal), who in turn is in the sights of the calculating and slightly devious Sergeant Belcore (Luke Scott), all under the watchful gaze of Giannetta (Lisa Williamson).

Enter snake-oil salesman Dr. Dulcamara (Adelmo Guidarelli) and a cheap bottle of wine (or two), resulting in a fun and whimsical romp, Mann says.

Those who would like to know more about the opera beforehand can attend Opera Talk, Mann’s half-hour chat about the opera, which will take place an hour and a half before the show. Tickets to Opera Talk are $5.

Attendees can also opt for a $15 al fresco boxed supper, prepared by Chips’ Pub III, on the lawn overlooking Clinton Harbor, an hour before each performance. Dinners must be ordered at least 24 hours in advance. Tickets are $55; $50 for seniors and $30 for students. Groups of eight or more are eligible for discounts.
