Cupcakes by Adelaide, 13

A one-of-a-kind chocolate cupcake with bright blue buttercream frosting and gold sprinkles made by Adelaide, 13, was declared the winner in a recent bake-off challenge at R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison.

The next chef challenge at R.J. Julia Booksellers, will be doughnuts, on Tuesday, Aug. 6 at 10:30 a.m. The upcoming challenge was inspired by The Doughnut Fix and The Doughnut King by Jessie Janowitz. Registration for that free event and more information, is available at www.rjjulia.com.

Other notable entries in the recent cupcake challenge include:

• Julia, 8, who has been baking since the age of 3, presented a chocolate cupcake with marshmallow filling and dyed-green coconut flakes to resemble grass.

• Clara, 8, submitted a lemon cupcake. Each of the six cupcakes were uniquely designed with sprinkles and/or icing, as well as a bright yellow lemon slice.

• Kayla, 12, also featured lemon: a lemon cupcake with lemon curd filling and a toasted lemon meringue frosting. Her sunflower art work impressed attendees.

• Calvin, 9, chose a classic stand-by: funfetti cake. However, a secret filling was in store for the taste-tester. Additionally, Calvin shared his expert frosting techniques (piping) with the crowd.

• Josie, 9, got creative with fondant. Josie’s cupcakes were possibly the most colorful of all the submissions: “My hands are kind of pink now,” she said. The challenge for Josie was dying the fondant (for the unicorn’s ears), which was only available in yellow (the unicorn’s horn).

After each baker presented their cupcakes to the judge, all attendees were welcome to sample all six cupcakes.
