CAS Art Reception & Awards Ceremony Presents more than $3,000 in Prizes

Clinton Art Society (CAS) will celebrate the opening of its 70th annual Summer Juried Exhibition with a Reception and Awards Ceremony on Sunday, July 21 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Green Room at Andrews Memorial Town Hall, 54 East Main Street, Clinton.

“In addition to exhibiting over 150 works by Connecticut artists, CAS will award over $3,000 in cash prizes,” says CAS President Liz Egan. “That’s the largest prize pool for artists in Connecticut. Our exhibition is juried by Florence Griswold Museum curator Jennifer Stettler Parsons. She not only selects the exhibited works from hundreds of entrants, she selects the prize winners. CAS is thrilled to be able to recognize artists in so many different ways.”

Many awards are contributed by local businesses, such as the Idiomas, LLC Best in Show Award. Others are donated in memory of a loved one or former CAS member, like the Cora Howard Memorial Award for Outstanding Watercolor donated by the son of the renowned Clinton watercolorist.

“We are so grateful to our donors,” Egan says. “It is such a special way to honor someone and support the growth of the arts in our community.”

This year Egan herself established a new award, an annual $200 cash award titled The Lita Kelmenson Award for Excellence in Sculpture named for Egan’s high school art teacher, mentor, and professional sculptor.

“Ms. Kelmenson was so important to my development as a person and as an artist,” Egan says. “She was an example to me in so many ways. She interceded for me during a very difficult time in my life. She taught me many artistic techniques, but she also taught me compassion and how one teacher can make a difference in the lives of her students.”

The July 21 reception is free and open to the public. Elaborate food and refreshments will be served.

Clinton Art Society’s 70th annual Summer Juried Exhibition will be on display at Andrews Memorial Town Hall, 54 East Main Street, Clinton through Sunday, Aug. 11. The exhibit is open Monday to Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon, and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. Extended hours from Monday, Aug. 3 to Sunday, Aug. 11 are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

CAS was founded in 1949 by a small group of professional artists dedicated to enhancing the arts on the Connecticut shoreline. CAS has become a vibrant force in the arts in Connecticut. Its members represent towns throughout the region working in all media, representational to abstract.
