This late native blooming perennial, Vernonia letermannii, or iron butterfly, is a dwarf ironweed that blooms in September into October. The foliage is very lacy, and the flowers are big round clusters of purple fuzzballs. Both butterflies and bees adore it. Photo courtesy of Natureworks
