Irving Berlin, Detroit Plays, ABBA, and More

Irving Berlin: Twice this summer you will have the chance to see Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin, a one man show that recounts the story of Berlin, the immigrant boy who became one of our most popular song writers. Felder plays Berlin and both sings and plays the piano as he tells the story. He’s well known for his shows, which have included Our Great Tchaikovsky, George Gershwin Alone, and others. The show will be at Hartford Stage, Friday, June 21 to Sunday, June 23. For tickets, visit HartfordStage.org. If you miss the show there, he is appearing at Westport Country Playhouse, Tuesday, July 16 through Saturday, Aug. 3

Still on Broadway: The musical Waitress is still going strong on Broadway, with the smell of freshly baked pies making everyone hungry. Now the national tour will bring the show—and the pies—to the Bushnell in Hartford. It runs Tuesday, June 18 to Sunday, June 23. For tickets, visit Bushnell.org.

Complete the Trilogy: Skeleton Crew, which is next at Westport Country Playhouse through Saturday, June 22, will give Connecticut audiences the opportunity to have seen all three Detroit plays by Dominique Morisseau in one season. Long Wharf started with Paradise Blue, Hartford Stage did Detroit 67, and there’s now this play about four factory workers who work at the last export auto plant in Detroit. The plant is about to close. For tickets, visit www.westportplayhouse.org, or call 1-888-927-7529,

ABBA Musical: Mamma Mia!, the musical using the songbook of the Swedish group ABBA, is now at the Connecticut Repertory Theatre’s Summer Series at UConn in Storrs. It stars four Broadway performers and is directed by Terrence Mann. Tickets are on sale at crt.uconn.edu or 860-486-2113. A second chance to see the long-running show will be at Ivoryton Playhouse, Wednesday, June 26 through Sunday, July 28. More information on that production is coming soon.

Cabaret Evening: Long Wharf has offered cabaret performances on Stage II beginning earlier this year with Anne Toffelmeir’s holiday show. From Wednesday, June 19 to Sunday, June 23, Mary Ann Frank is presenting her show, Spinning. For tickets or information, visit longwharf.org or call 203-787-4282.

Long Wharf & the Community: Long Wharf Theatre has been working with community partners on the New Haven Play Project, which involves participants working with Long Wharf staff to write and present plays. The partners are the Connecticut Mental Health Center & Foundation, The Towers, Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services, and the New Haven Free Public Library. It will culminate in performances of two new plays at Long Wharf; on Friday, June 28 it is Survivors and on Sunday, June 30, Elders & Newcomers. For tickets or information, visit longwharf.org or call 203-787-4282.

Added Show: Long Wharf has announced another play for its 2019-’20 season. Pride and Prejudice as adapted by Kate Hamill is billed as innovative, contemporary, and a feminist take on the class story. It will run Nov. 27 through Dec. 22.
