Book Talk with Susan Campbell, Author of Frog Hollow

The Ivoryton Library, 106 Main Street, Ivoryton, presents a Book Talk with Susan Campbell on Sunday, June 9 at 4 p.m. Campbell will speak about her new book, Frog Hollow: Stories from an American Neighborhood (Wesleyan University Press, 2019), a love letter to immigration, told in colorful, historical vignettes.

Frog Hollow is a multilayered, ethnically diverse neighborhood just west of the Connecticut State Capitol in Hartford, home to immigrants from many nations. During the Revolutionary War, it was a progressive hub, and later, in the mid- to late-19th century, a hotbed of industry. In telling their stories, Campbell focuses on the inventors, entrepreneurs, and workers of the neighborhood, as well as the impact of African American migration to Hartford, the Civil Rights movement, and the continuing fight for housing.

Campbell says, “You can learn a lot by taking a deep-dive into one American neighborhood,” and there are parallels to be drawn with the village of Ivoryton, which Campbell, a resident of Ivoryton, will discuss.

Books will be available for purchase and signing during the reception. This event is free and open to the public, but space is limited. For more information or to reserve a seat, email staff@ivorytonlibrary.org or call 860-767-1252.
