The Bookshop of the Broken Hearted by Robert Hillman

This story of love, loss and redemption is set in rural Australia during the late 1960s, and told through three voices. Tom Hope is a sheep farmer who’s been unlucky in love; Hannah Babel is a Jewish woman who survived Auschwitz but lost her husband and child; and Peter Carson is the young son of Tom’s first wife and taken by his mother to live with a religious cult. All three of these characters are broken and damaged but, as the story develops, they find hope for the future.
