Volunteers Needed for Shorebird Education

Each year thousands of beach-nesting birds return to Connecticut to raise their young, and volunteers are being sought to help them do that.

Anyone who enjoys spending summer days at the beach and talking to people about nature is welcome to get trained as a shorebird educator. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Friends of Westbrook Barrier Islands are seeking volunteers to conduct shorebird education on Westbrook’s West Beach from May through August.

Prior education about shorebirds is not required. A training and orientation session for volunteers will be held on Monday, May 20, at 6:30 p.m. at the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge, 733 Old Clinton Road, Westbrook.

Those interested in finding out more about the training session, or who need specific directions, can contact USFWS Visitor Services Manager Shaun Roche at shaun_roche@fws.gov. Reservations are not required, but an email notification about anyone who is interested in attending is appreciated.
