Circe by Madeline Miller

Some of us, mostly women, I’d guess, who read the Odyssey in our youth wondered about Penelope, Odysseus’s wife. She was the most faithful of wives, true, but surely the most gullible. A man who could defeat the one-eyed giant in days, sail a narrow strait past a whirlpool and a monster in hours, was stuck on an island for 10 years with a beautiful goddess? Really? Stuck? This book tells her story, before, during, and after that 10-year idyll, and the rest of the story of that family on Ithaca including Odysseus, Penelope, and Telemachus. This is a lovely alternate history read!
