Triple Frontier is an entertaining new original film that recently began streaming on Netflix. Starring several big-name leading actors including Ben Affleck (Argo and Gone Girl) and Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim and TV’s Sons of Anarchy), the film is about five friends who attempt to rob a South American drug lord.

Recently divorced and attempting to make it as a Florida realtor, Tom Davis (Affleck) is a retired U.S. Special Forces operative who takes life one mundane day at a time ever since he retired. When his former colleague and friend, Santiago “Pope” Garcia (Oscar Isaac of Ex Machina and A Most Violent Year) shows up unexpectedly one day with a plan to rob a South American drug lord of millions of dollars, Tom refuses at first to be a part of it, insisting he’s retired from such work, but he is eventually drawn into the plan.

Pope also recruits three other friends, Will Miller (Hunnam), Ben Miller (Garrett Hedlund of Tron: Legacy and Mudbound), and Francisco “Catfish” Morales (Pedro Pascal of The Great Wall and HBO’s Game of Thrones). Each of the men has reservations over getting involved in such a dangerous scheme, but is drawn in by the promise of one last hurrah together while collecting millions.

Pope’s actual plan is different than the one he initially sells to his friends. He brings them to a remote jungle in Columbia under the pretense that they are simply going to observe the safe-like home of drug lord Gabriel Lorea (Reynaldo Gallegos of Animal Kingdom and Logan) and help form a plan for a local police force to execute. Once there, however, Pope reveals that his actual plan is to kill Lorea and steal as much of Lorea’s money as he can, splitting it five ways between the friends.

The stakes are high and the conditions are dangerous, even for men who served 17 years as Special Forces operatives. They reluctantly agree to the new plan, but only under a very specific set of circumstances and self-mandated rules to help keep them safe.

Not long after Pope and the guys break into Lorea’s home, do they begin to improvise despite their earlier good intentions. They encounter trouble with Lorea’s guards and begin to get greedy when they discover far more cash than they imagined. From there, it is a matter of attempting to survive while exiting the country.

Triple Frontier gets off to a very strong start when introducing the main players and during the invasion at Lorea’s home, but once the team has the cash, the pace slows down tremendously. Luckily, the soundtrack to the film is outstanding and, from Metallica to Pantera, the energy of the film is bolstered over and over by great cuts of music.
