01/16/2019 11:01 PMLocal jazz guitarist Dr. Joe Cardinale will appear with local bassist Jeff Fuller, along with pianist Matt DeChamplain and vocalist Atla DeChamplain, and drummer Ben Bilello on Friday, Feb. 1, at the Stony Creek Congregational Church, 192 Thimble Island Road, Branford. The all-jazz show begins at 7:30 p.m. The snow date is Saturday, Feb. 2.
Cardinale, an associate professor of clinical therapeutic radiology with the Yale School of Medicine, grew up with a love of both medicine and music. Raised in a medical family, he began playing the guitar before he was 10 years old, but abandoned the instrument in pursuit of medical training and practice.
“But about 15 years ago, I bought a guitar on a whim,” he says.
He began studying again, and his love for jazz paired him with professional jazz musicians who brought him to performance level.
DeChamplain has sung with jazz legend Jon Hendricks at the Monterey Jazz Festival in California, as well as with Jose Feliciano, Nat Reeves, and others. Her husband Matt DeChamplain has performed at Monterey and other top jazz festivals and studied with jazz piano luminary Billy Taylor. He has recorded a solo piano album titled Stride-Bop. His style combines stride, swing, bebop and blues elements. They have released an album together, Pause.
Fuller has appeared with Dizzy Gillespie, Mose Allison, Gerry Mulligan, and many others. His second CD is Shoreline Blues.
Bilello attended the Hartt School of Music where he won the Hartt Award of Excellence in Jazz Studies. He has played with many jazz artists and continues to teach on the college level as well as privately.
