While the holidays can be a time of peace, joy, and hope, some people need to leave room for grief, loss, and dismay. With that in mind, several area churches have announced plans for Longest Night services to comfort those people.

On Sunday, Dec. 16 at 5 p.m., First Congregational Church of Westbrook, 1166 Boston Post Road, Westbrook is planning a service in the sanctuary.

On Friday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m., the Chapel at Old Stone Church, 251 Main Street, East Haven is planning “a time of prayerful reflection and gathering for those facing loss or feeling blue,” according to a release from the church. “For many in East Haven and surrounding community, Christmas may bring out many emotions, and not always joy and you may feel you don’t have an appropriate place to reflect and let go. This Christmas you are welcome to join Old Stone Church on Friday evening as we gather to reflect, share or let go of the pain that hurts us this time of year.” More information is available by calling 203-467-2907.

Also on Friday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m., the North Madison Congregational Church, 1271 Durham Road, Madison, invites all to join its Longest Night Service, “designed to provide a safe place to express and attend to sadness during the holiday season. More information is available at northmadisoncc.org/worship/special-services/.

Many other congregations have similar services and, if so, information is available on their websites or Facebook pages.
