Heavy: An American Memoir by Kiese Laymon

A young man shares the stories and lessons of his life from ages 8 to 43 in this timely piece written as a letter to his mother. Heartbreakingly honest, this is the story of abuse and its aftermath. It is the story of what it means to grow up poor and black in Jackson, Mississippi; of coping with trauma through overeating and bulimia; of coping with trauma through reading, writing, and revising. And it is the story of the triumph of coming through to the other side. This is hands down the most beautifully written book I have read in the last five years. And I read a lot of books.
