Special at Goodspeed; Streaming Shows; and Holiday Theater in NYC

Special Events at Goodspeed: If you are seeing A Connecticut Christmas Carol at Goodspeed’s Terris Theatre in Chester, you might want to combine it with some of the special events the theater is offering. Among them are Thursday evening dinner packages at the Rustica Ristorante in Chester, Friday Date Night on Friday, Dec. 7, a sensory-friendly performance on Sunday, Dec. 9, and an open caption performance on Friday, Dec. 7. Dinner discounts are also available for most Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday evening performances. For tickets or information, visit goodspeed.org or call 860-873-8668.

More Ways to See Shows: The digital age is allowing people to see more shows without leaving their homes. While PBS airs Broadway and off-Broadway productions, among the newer options is StreamingMusicals.com. This digital platform will film productions and make them available for purchase. Check it out at streamingmusicals.com.

Cinemas are also showing filmed productions. Allegiance, the musical about the internment of Americans of Japanese origin during World War II will return to cinemas on Tuesday, Dec. 11. Check FathomEvents.com to locate a theater.

WNET—the New York City Public Television station is launching at the end of January All Arts, a streaming platform and broadcast channel that is described as offering “access to all forms of creative expression [dance, film, music, and more] from New York and around the world.” Some programming is available now on the web, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Holiday Theater in NYC: New York City can be magical at Christmas. The tree at Rockefeller Center; the elaborate store windows at Macy’s 34th Street, Saks 5th Avenue, and others; and the smell of chestnuts roasting on an open fire, plus the various holiday markets that pop in Bryant Park (42nd Street between 5th and 6th) and at Columbus Circle. A trip into the city to see the sights can also include entertainment. Everyone knows about the Radio City Music Hall spectacular Christmas show with Santa and the Rockettes. You might not want to see if every year, but certainly every few years it’s worth a visit to see the changes. You can also include a backstage tour led by a Rockette. Let’s be honest—you don’t actually go backstage, but you do see a lot of the Music Hall that others don’t see and you see a variety of costumes.

This year, Gavin Lee who has two Tony nominations to his credit (for Mary Poppins and SpongeBob) will be playing the Grinch in the musical How the Grinch Stole Christmas! It is at the Hula Theater at Madison Square Garden Thursday, Dec. 13 to Sunday, Dec. 30. Tickets are available at msg.com.

The Irish Rep is once again presenting its version of Dylan Thomas’s classic A Child’s Christmas in Wales. It will run through Sunday, Dec. 30. This production features songs interwoven into Thomas’s remembrances of his childhood Christmases. For tickets, visit the Irishrep.org

Another Christmas-themed show is more solemn though it is a musical; All Is Calm tells the story of the World War I Christmas Eve truce between the German and English soldiers. Music is a major part of the production at the Sheen Center in Greenwich Village. Tickets are at sheencenter.org.

The Nutcracker will have numerous productions, but the most well-known is the one choreographed by George Balanchine and presented annually by the New York State Ballet at Lincoln Center.
