My Dinner with Hervé: An HBO Original Film

The HBO Original biopic My Dinner with Hervé premiered last month and is available to watch anytime with an HBO subscription. It tells the story of the last few days of the life of French actor Hervé Villechaize, the famous French actor who starred in the Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun and the popular TV series Fantasy Island.

Peter Dinklage (HBO's Game of Thrones and X-Men: Days of Future Past) stars as Hervé. Public appearances made fans believe that Hervé had it all, but inside he fought with many demons, both physical and emotional.

Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey and TV's The Fall) stars as a struggling journalist, Danny Tate, tasked to interview Hervé. While on a trip from the UK to Los Angeles to interview a different celebrity, Danny's editor tacks on a side project for him to complete during his trip - a quick interview with Hervé that can be built into a short, humorous article.

What transpires over the course of the night of the interview is far from short and far from humorous. Essentially Hervé divulges his life story to Danny throughout the entire wild night spent together. What Danny doesn't know at the time is it is Hervé's goodbye note to the world. Hervé took his own life at the age of 50 in 1993

The entire story of Hervé's life is told including Hervé's difficult childhood with a mother who refused to love him because of his dwarfism and a surgeon father who loved him, but fought to change him through surgery. After achieving fame as a painter and an actor, Hervé drank in excess, struggled to feel loved after a string of bad relationships, and proved to be an all-around difficult actor to work alongside of on the set of Fantasy Island, the show that he famously quit over a payroll dispute.

Dornan's Danny character is based loosely on writer/director Sacha Gervasi, who lived the experience of getting to know Hervé just before his death. Gervasi promised Hervé that he would tell his story to the world and now, after many years, he has fulfilled that promise.
