NIbbles: Sift

When I visit in Mystic, I spend a good amount of time at Bank Square Books, often buying greeting cards. Many times I thought to visit nearby Sift, a bakery whose chef/owner, Adam Young, became Food Network’s “Best Baker in America” in 2018. Every time I pass by, the line spills out the door onto the sidewalk on Water Street. But my friend, Rose Levy Beranbaum, the summa cum laude of baking, was going to meet me for lunch after her book demo and book signing at Johnson and Wales. I met her and her friend, Woody, at Sift at 10 a.m. and the line was only about one deep. We drank great coffee and shared a round sticky bun, five inches tall. It was big enough for us to share. I have never tasted anything more delicious. I don’t care what it cost, nor now many calories it contained. Go on a weekday morning, or maybe a weekday afternoon. Choose that sticky bun or maybe something else in the sparkly glass cases. And maybe go by yourself and eat every morsel. When you sit with your pastry, close your eyes, and imagine heaven.
