Nibbles; Pancakes and Maple(ish) Syrup

I have just finished reading John Sandford’s latest thriller, Holy Ghost. Sandford has two protagonists, Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers. The latter is the detective in Holy Ghost and the novel takes place in a small town in Minnesota with just one restaurant that serves awful food. Even the pancakes are terrible, says Flowers. He wonders how anyone can ruin pancakes. That made me happy that I knew where to go for the best pancakes on the Connecticut shoreline: Cristy’s in Westbrook. But then I wondered? Are they still the best? I set out to investigate. Yup. One is enough. It is the size of a dinner plate and it is fabulous. You can get almost any kind of pancake, but why fool around with a perfect pancake? As for maple syrup, I grew up with the very fake Vermont Maid syrup. I still like it better than the real thing. So sue me.
