The Clinton Art Society featured exhibit on display at Andrews Memorial Town Hall, 54 East Main Street, Clinton will feature the work of exhibition winners Joanna Chapin, Hilary Griffin, and Karen Wiesner. The exhibit runs Thursday, Nov. 1 through Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019. There will be a reception with the artists Thursday, Nov. 15 from 5 to 7 p.m. Assorted hors d’ouevres and refreshments will be served.

Exhibition Winners is a newly designed exhibition for Clinton Art Society.

“Each of the artists in the exhibit won Xrize at one of Clinton Art Society’s 2018 exhibits,” says Liz Egan, president of Clinton Art Society. “Independent jurors selected these artists as the artist they wanted to see more of. Exhibition Winners will feature a broad selection of each artists work. Most juried shows only feature one or two pieces of an artist’s work. It’s terrific for audiences members to see a complete artistic voice.”

With this exhibit, Clinton Art Society will have work on display at Andrews Memorial Town Hall year-round. Thanks to an agreement between Clinton First Selectman Christine Goupil and Clinton Art Society, local artists will be featured on the walls of Andrews’ Green Room throughout the year.

An Unlikely Opportunity

Chester resident JoAnna Chapin won her Exhibition Prize at CAS’s 69th annual Summer Juried Exhibition. She was selected by Florence Griswold Museum Director Becky Beaulieu, Ph.D. Chapin began her career as a theatrical costume and prop designer. She worked as the production stage manager for The National Theater of the Deaf, later working as a stage manager for many theatrical productions in New York City. After having children, she enrolled in the New York School of Interior Design, and began a successful career as an interior designer in New York City. An unlikely opportunity came along to be a wrangler on a ranch for abused horses in New Mexico. There she tended 19 horses, 29 goats and sheep, and nine dogs under the huge skies of the New Mexico mesa. Her growing love of animals and the art of watercolor led her to focus entirely on her visual art career. She started painting in 2011 and focuses professionally on animal portrait commissions. She lives and works in Chester as a painter and animal portraitist.

An Unusual Start

Madison resident Karen Wiesner won her Exhibition Prize in CAS’s annual Member’s Exhibition in April. She was selected by Curator Judy LeFebvre Schiffer. Born in Hartford, Wiesner came to her art from an unusual start. After graduating from The Oxford School (now the Kingswood-Oxford Academy), she attended Mount Holyoke College majoring in economics. She married in her senior year, 1960. Raising her two children then took precedence.

“As a child I painted at New Haven Art League and loved it!” Wiesner says. “When I raised my children, I needed to get out at night and so I attended Adult Education programs locally. I took oil painting classes with Lou Bonamarte. His work was very tight. Then, I took pastel classes and participated in demos with pastel artist Jurgen Geith. His work was really abstract. My work has wound up somewhere in the middle.”

Wiesner, will feature an array of her pastel landscapes in the exhibit. Wiesner is a member of Guilford art League, Madison Art Society, and Lyme Art Association. Wiesner is an elected member of Clinton Art Society.

Madison resident Hilary Griffin won her Exhibition Prize at CAS’s 69th annual Summer Juried Exhibition. She was selected by Florence Griswold Museum Director Becky Beaulieu, Ph.D. Griffin will showcase her watercolor plein air landscapes and observational still life paintings. Griffin is currently vice-president of Madison Art Society. She is an elected member of Clinton Art Society, and an associate member of Guilford Art League and Lyme Art Association.
