Apples at Scotts’ Farms

At Scotts’ Farms in Essex and Deep River, they grow a wide variety of apples, some with just a few trees and others with a few hundred. Some are intended for pick-your-own, and sale to the public. Others are intended as test runs, to see how different varieties perform in the Connecticut soil and climate, and how they perform on the market shelves. Still others are destined for the Scotts’ table, including the Spigolds, a firm-sweet apple with a complex taste that some describe as herbal, floral, and citrusy with a hint of acidity. Owner Winston Scott also favors Jonagolds, a cross between Jonathan and Golden Delicious apples.

“I plant them because I like them,” he says.

Here are some of the varieties Scotts currently grows: Lodi, Gingergold, Gravenstein, Alexander, Mollies Delicious, Golden Supreme, Gala, Greening, Jonamac, Macintosh, Honeycrisp, Cortland, Macoun, Daybreak Fuji, Eves Delight, Empire, Jonathan, Jonagold, Spigold, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Mutsu, Melrose, Idared,, Winesap, Baldwin, Braeburn, Northern Spy, Newtown Pippin, Red Fuji, Pink Lady, and Granny Smith.
