The Shore Line Trolley Museum (SLTM) is hosting several special events this month, including story hours, Christmas in July on Saturday, July 21, and a national trolley festival on Saturday, July 28.

In addition, trolleys run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday as part of the museum’s regular schedule.

Children’s Story Hour: Every Tuesday during the month of July at 11 a.m., this program provides an opportunity for children aged 4 to 8 to listen to a story in a real trolley car. The day begins with a trolley ride at 11 a.m. (please be on time!) along the trolley line through the salt marsh, possibly seeing osprey, herons, egrets, swans, and other wildlife before returning to the trolley yard. There, participants will board the historic Story Trolley to listen to each week’s children’s story, read by one of SLTM’s volunteer educators, followed by time to explore the other trolley cars on display. In addition to the reading program, each child will receive a snack and a drink. Participants can also bring their own lunch to enjoy at the picnic area. A parent or adult chaperone is required to accompany all children. A different story will be featured each week.

Christmas in July, Saturday, July 21: The first annual Christmas in July Craft Far will feature local artisans along with face painting and a visit from Santa from noon until 1 p.m. No admission will be charged for the craft fair; the regular admission fee for trolley rides and tours applies.

Guest Operator Weekend, Saturday, July 21, and Sunday, July 22: (reservations are required to be a guest operator): For those who have always wanted to run a streetcar or subway train, there will be an opportunity at the Shore Line Trolley Museum by signing up for the Guest Operator program. Participants will be given an overview of operating principles by a SLTM instructor. Then they will take the handles and operate solo. Guest operators won’t have any regular passengers, just the guest operator, the instructor, and anyone who is an invited guest of the operator.

National Trolley Festival, Saturday, July 28: This event showcases some of the museum’s collection in motion and many of these cars aren’t normally seen running for the public. Participants can experience the golden age of transportation as trolley cars from the turn of the last century parade by, including the work horses of the U.S. streetcar era such as antique repair, emergency, and snow plows. This once a year event provides all day photo oppotrtunities and rail art-in-motion parades. Parades will include a short narration on each vehicle. Reservations aren’t required, but participants should plan on arriving a half hour early for the start of each parade. Parades start at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
