All Happy Families by Jeanne McCulloch

Jeanne McCulloch’s moving memoir begins with her wedding weekend at the East Hampton seaside home of her parents. The day before the wedding, as weekend guests arrive and preparations are in full swing, the bride’s father suffers a massive stroke. After a vigil at his bedside, the mother of the bride firmly instructs the doctors, regardless of developments, not to call the house. “We are having a party,” she explains. McCulloch’s upbringing between East Hampton and Park Avenue with decidedly eccentric parents appears to be normalizing with her marriage to Dean, from a stable family from Camden, Maine. But life is rarely what it seems.
