The House of Broken Angels by Luis Alberto Urrea

Big Angel prepares to celebrate his birthday. He knows it will be his last one. Then, suddenly, he has to bury his mother. In the week between her funeral and his birthday party, we are taken on a journey of reminiscence through the lives of his big, messy, Mexican-American family. Though very much about the passing of time and the inevitability of death, the plot offers plenty of twists and turns. I found myself grabbing a tissue, marking passages filled with tender moments, and then laughing out loud as I continued down that same page.
