1926.

That was the year that the National Broadcasting Network was launched. Hugh Hefner, Fidel Castro, and Marilyn Monroe were born. Calvin Coolidge was the President of the United States, and Winnie the Pooh was first published.

In Clinton, Seward Hull, Sr., while director of the United Methodist Church, founded the Community Choral Club.

Now known as the Choral Club of Clinton (CCC), this musical association, made up of members from the shoreline towns, launched its 92nd season earlier this month.

CCC has given annual concerts every year since 1926 except during the war years. Seward Hull was the sole director from 1926 until his death in 1960. He founded the group for people who have a love of music and singing. Just like today, no auditions were required. Music of all kinds has always been part of the group’s repertoire. CCC has performed selections from American music and spirituals, classical selections, Broadway hits, symphonic pieces, and folk music.

Today, CCC is led by Director Jeremy Milton, who is also the director of choral music for the Old Saybrook school system. Along with accompanist Joyce Baxter, director of music for the First Church of Christ Congregational in Clinton, CCC is holding rehearsals every Tuesday evening at the United Methodist Church, 12 Commerce Street, Clinton. This year’s concert will be held Sunday, June 3 at the church.

Again this year, the Old Saybrook Chamber Singers will be invited performers at the concert. These high school students tour New England each year, have performed with professional singers, and have been invited to perform for the Connecticut ACDA Conference next October. CCC is proud to have them join the group. The second act of the concert in June will feature the music of John Denver.

Income for this non-profit group is derived from dues, sponsorships, and concert tickets. New voices are needed in each section, and especially in the tenor and bass sections. People interested in becoming a part of CCC, whether as a participating singer or a financial supporter, are asked to contact President Gail Carlisle at 860-669-2702.
