Universal Harvester by John Darnielle

The premise is irresistible: Imagine you’re watching a movie you rented from your local video store. Suddenly, the film is interrupted by a short home video of someone blindfolded and tied to a chair in what appears to be an abandoned barn. And then the normal movie continues playing again. One of the most unique and unpredictable books of 2017, Universal Harvester is simultaneously creepy, menacing, and mysterious. And it is a touching portrait of a young man coming to terms with the death of his mother. Darnielle is an author to be watched.
