The Tender Bar by J. R. Moehringer

This is a coming-of-age memoir of a fatherless boy who grows up in a sheltering bar full of men who step up to do the job his father couldn’t. Moehringer’s hard-working single mom pushed him to make something of himself; he goes to Yale and eventually gets hired and fired by The New York Times in this tale that’s both humorous and sad, insightful and honest. I especially enjoyed the many literary references throughout the book. I found it to be a wonderful read.
