Carnegie’s Maid by Marie Benedict

The novel is a Downton Abbey story played out on this side of the Atlantic. Clara Kelly is a brilliant young woman who rises far above her unpretentious beginnings. Educated by her father, an Irish tenant farmer, Clara is sent by her father to America as the family farm is lost acre by acre. Arriving in Philadelphia, Clara manages to pass herself off as a lady’s maid and miraculously finds herself in Pittsburgh serving the widowed mother of Andrew Carnegie. Clara shapes herself into the perfect servant, indispensable to her mistress and secret confidant to the son. Although she hides her true background as well as her strong connection to her mistress’s successful son, Clara never compromises her fine intelligence and strength of character. She becomes the inspiration for Carnegie to share his wealth.
