Set in present day, the third book in the George Smiley series centers on Peter Guillam, Smiley’s once right-hand man, as he’s called to account for his role in a Cold War mission gone bad. Le Carre’s firsthand spying experience shines through in brilliant detail—the story feels grounded and authentic; the dialogue crackles while avoiding cliché; and the way in which he intersperses top secret reports (containing vital information and misinformation) between agents is simply ingenious.
