Nibbles: Hash House A Go Go

A few weeks ago, eight of us went to Mohegan Sun to watch the UConn women’s basketball game against Oklahoma. While I mostly prefer eating at Pepe’s, the group decided to have dinner at Hash House A Go Go. I had eaten there twice, once for breakfast and once for a salad. I knew the portions are gigantic

I think it’s difficult to handle eight people on a deadline, but I was amazed at the service and the fact that all our meals (seven different entrées) arrived hot and quickly (two of which were breakfast meals, which the restaurant serves all the time). I ordered that day’s special: chicken fried steak. I have had it in New Mexico and Texas, and have made it myself. I love it and I know how it should be made: The steak was just the right amount of chew, the batter was just spicy enough, the mashed potatoes were still chunky, and the gravy was perfectly beige. I took enough home for another meal and froze the mashed potatoes in one-cup portions, enough to make eight loaves of potato bread. I would certainly choose to eat there again.
