A Celebration of the Arts at Breakwater Books

Nantucket, Eugene Healy

On Thursday, Dec. 21, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., Breakwater Books, 81 Whitfield Street, Guilford, will host a Celebration of the Arts, featuring several paintings by two artists, Eugene Healy and Kevin Scorgie, whose paintings are currently on view at the bookstore. The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

Scorgie was born in Wellesley Massachusetts and currently resides in Dorchester, Massachusetts. A painter of the sea and coast, Scorgie is connected to his Scottish ancestry and says he feels his connection to the British Isles does enter his work in subtle ways. Scorgie cites British artists Vanessa Bell, Patrick Heron, Frederick Delius, and Ralph Vaughan Williams as artists he admires. Scorgie is known for his rapid execution and energetic brushwork. His paintings are colorful and lively compositions, with each brush stroke being deliberate and in the moment.

Healy, a resident of Madison, was born in Connecticut and studied at the New York Institute of Technology. He paints in combinations of oil, acrylic, acrylic adhesives, watercolor, encaustic, oil crayon, colored pencil, collage on canvas, and lacquered papers. He cites his influences as Matisse, Vermeer, Richard Diebenkorn, Robert Rauschenberg, Hans Hoffman, and the Fauve painters, among others. He has served as director of the National Artists’ Alliance Inc., and exhibition designer at the Yale Center for British Art.
