Reckless Daughter, A Portrait of Joni Mitchell by David Jaffe

I was devoted to Joni Mitchell’s music growing up, but then lost track of her completely, always wondering which of us outgrew the other. This biography answered that question through its meticulous chronology of her musical path in the context of American culture from the ’70s onward. It’s like the lyrics from “Blue,” that life was interesting, ironic, occasionally cruel, and the theme was always the search for love and meaning. Several decades later I still know all the words, while she continues to confound and fascinate her fans.
