Nibbles: Maple Breeze Farm

When my editor, Pem McNerney, wrote about Maple Breeze Farm in Westbrook, I asked her if they might have lard, also known as pig fat. She did, she said. Since this is the time of year I make lots of pies, I prefer to use butter and lard instead of the Crisco I once used. But the lard in supermarket is not necessary a good thing (assuming animal fat is good and we know Crisco is not). So off I went to the farm and, sure enough, there it was in the John and Bonnie Hall’s big freezer. So was Simsbury’s Tulmeadow Farm ice cream, which some say is the best in the state. Aside from the fact that the lard had to be rendered (I will write about that in another column), the ice cream is absolutely amazing. I bought a quart of Toasted Almond Crunch. I do not binge on ice cream, so the quart will last me for a month or more. The Halls also raise cattle, so they (and we) know what the animals eat and where they live. They are open on Saturdays, but it’s always a good idea to call first to make sure they are open.—Lee White
