Local Goodness from Grano

Grano, the new restaurant in the old 1902 savings bank building at 6 Main Street in Chester, opened recently to a big crowd and great fanfare. Run by Joel and Lani Gargano of Branford, the restaurant features food made from local farms and food suppliers including Star Light Garden in Durham, Wellstone Farm in Higganum, Baffani’s Poultry Farm in Rhode Island, Still River Farm in Litchfield, Upper Pond Farm in Old Lyme, and Four Star Farm in Massachusetts, which provides New England grown grains and hops that Gargano turns into flour and then pasta and bread. The menu looks fabulous and includes small plates (roasted carrot crostini, squash soup, beet carpaccio, and local greens); “pasta integrale” (potato gnocchi, rye calamarata, spelt spaghetti, and conchiglie con Bolognese); and “plates” (a roasted half chicken, frutti di mare, and a 12-ounce New York Strip). Sides include a red flint corn polenta with Malinda Mae cheese from the Mystic Cheese Co. Find out more by visting www.granoct.com.
