Old Oliver’s Becomes New Scotch Plains Tavern

A new restaurant is scheduled to open soon at 124 Westbrook Road in Essex, called Scotch Plains Tavern, in the former home of Oliver’s. The owners are tidying up and brightening up the interior and exterior. It looks like there will still be a game room, updated, a big stone fireplace, and two floors of food and fun that customers will enter by walking through a doorway that looks like a gigantic oak barrel of Scotch whiskey.

There’s not much information yet about what kind of food will be served, but gluten free options will be offered, and marked as such on the menu. The owners also operate the The Back Porch in Old Saybrook, which serves American food, and lots of seafood, on the banks of the Connecticut River, with a side of live music most nights. That’s closed for the season now, until April.

Scotch Plains is due to open in November. Find out more by visiting www.facebook.com/scotchplainstavern or www.scotchplainstavern.com. In the meantime, the Essex Chocolatier and Coffee Bar has opened in the same building, and it offers artisan chocolate, gourmet coffee, and even treats for your dog.
