Musical Art Society presents another in its continuing 101 series: Autoharp 101. Featuring Drew Smith, Raye Hodgson, and Kathy Fox, the concert will showcase this unusual multi-stringed instrument in musical styles ranging from folk to pop to jazz and more. The concert is free and open to the public and will end with a sing-along of a well-known song accompanied by all three musicians and special guests. The concert will be Friday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Blackstone Library Auditorium, 758 Main Street, Branford.

The three artists will sing and demonstrate distinctly different styles and genres on the autoharp, culminating with a performance by Smith, a renowned performer and workshop leader who has appeared around the U.S. He is a member of the Autoharp Hall of Fame and a two-time winner of the Winfield International Autoharp Championship, and was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the California Autoharp Gathering. Hodgson and Fox will present a variety of folk, spirituals, and bluegrass. The audience is as likely to hear Smith strike up a Russian tango as a blues or a Dixieland tune from the ’20s as well as old-time tunes.

The Musical Art Society is a non-profit cultural arts organization founded in 1920 to promote and support excellence in music in the community. It presents several concerts each year and awards an annual scholarship to a high school student planning to study music in college the following year.
