My friend Lisa recommended this book, and it sounded kind of weird at first. A traveling troupe of actors encounters a renegade priest, on the lam after an ill-considered liaison with a married woman, in the middle of a freezing cold winter, in 14th century England? But Lisa knows a good story when she reads one, and Barry Unsworth’s tale had me from the first words of the first sentence, “It was death that began it all...” Not only is this book brilliantly imagined, it is a tale well told, and essential reading for anyone who understands that stories, in all their glorious forms, have the power to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.
