Love and Other Consolation Prizes by Jamie Ford

If you liked Ford’s novel Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, you will enjoy this even more! The story begins when a Chinese boy is sent to America with other orphaned children. He ends up at the 1902 Seattle World’s Fair and is auctioned off as a prize. His winner is a renowned madam of a prominent brothel. Life there is full of surprises and he sees the sordid, corrupt, yet elegant side of Seattle at that time, and befriends two servant girls. His story is told to his journalist daughter who uncovers truths about her parents she never knew. The author has researched much to bring us this mysterious, heartbreaking, yet redeeming story.
